Libraries
The traditional notion of a library as a repository for dusty stacks of books no longer accurately describes the mission and role of an academic library. Today, libraries are vibrant, fast–paced nerve centers where knowledge is created, accessed, and maintained for users in locations around the world.
Notre Dame is now challenged with maintaining a research library that can support the breadth and quality of its academic programs. The rapidly rising costs of journals and electronic databases, upon which students from a variety of disciplines are increasingly dependent, is of particular concern. So, too, are the physical spaces which house Notre Dame's vast electronic and paper collections, as the libraries are being stretched literally to their breaking points.
Recognizing that a strong library is the foundation stone for teaching, learning, and research, the Spirit of Notre Dame campaign seeks $60 million to improve library collections and technologies, renovate the Hesburgh Library to reflect the needs of current collections and academic programs, and create endowed librarian positions to lead these various endeavors.
