Graduate Fellowships
Introduced in 1918, the Graduate School is enjoying renewed focus as Notre Dame actively pursues a position of prominence among great American research universities. Melding rigorous academic preparation with professional development, teacher training, and research experience, Notre Dame’s Graduate School now stands at the threshold of true distinction.
Over the past two decades, the School has benefited from an infusion of intellectual capital, through the appointment of world-class faculty. Ongoing investments in facilities have made available sophisticated research labs and teaching space. Elevation in the standards and resources of the Graduate School have brought about a concomitant rise in the credentials of incoming graduate students.
Yet Notre Dame still lags considerably behind the nation’s best research universities in terms of graduate fellowships. Such funds are absolutely critical to the School’s ability to recruit top graduate students—who will, in turn, enhance the quality of our graduate programs and provide important academic role models for undergraduates.
Thus, the Spirit of Notre Dame campaign seeks $40 million in endowed graduate fellowships.
Campaign Priorities for Graduate Fellowships
Endowed Fellowships
Notre Dame’s graduate fellowships are significantly lower than those of peer institutions: consider that a humanities fellowship at Notre Dame averages $11,700, while comparable fellowships at other leading programs range from $13,000 to $17,000. Spirit of Notre Dame aims to boost graduate fellowships to a level of parity with our peers, in order to ensure that Notre Dame enrolls the best and brightest graduate students.
How can I help? Endowed graduate fellowships may be created at the following giving levels: Named ($100,000), Prize ($250,000), Distinguished ($500,000), Presidential ($1 million), and Premier ($5 million).
