College of Science
The completion of the 202,000–sq.–ft. Jordan Hall of Science in 2006 vastly upgraded the College's ability to teach 21st–century science. Jordan contains the most advanced science teaching instrumentation of any facility in the nation, including 40 teaching labs, a state–of–the–art digital theatre, a greenhouse, herbarium, and observatory.
While plans for Jordan Hall have been under discussion for more than two decades, its construction does not mark the culmination of those dreams, but rather the beginning of a new era that will redefine Notre Dame's role in science and research.
In short, Notre Dame aspires to be the world's premier Catholic research university. While it is now one of the fastest–growing research universities in the nation, considerable work remains to be done. Hence Spirit of Notre Dame seeks $135 million in funding that will:
- Enhance Notre Dame's stature among research universities;
- Strengthen its voice in the global dialogue surrounding the complex, often controversial, scientific and technological issues of the day;
- Improve the undergraduate and graduate educational experience;
- And foster important contributions to medicine, environmental science, and nano technologies, among other key areas.
