College of Engineering
In the last few decades, technology has wrought dramatic advances in all areas of life, from human health to communications to bioengineering. Engineers have taken the lead in virtually all of these advances and are increasingly doing so in collaboration with biologists, social scientists, lawyers, and ethicists.
Notre Dame's College of Engineering has been a key player in some of the discipline's most important breakthroughs. In recent years, for example, our researchers have developed what is currently the world's fastest–growing water treatment facility and created a “smart” damper to stabilize tall buildings during earthquakes.
The College is now at a crossroads. Counter to national trends, undergraduate and graduate student enrollment is rising. Distinct research niches have evolved in recent years, gaining the respect of colleagues around the world. The College has assembled a highly distinguished faculty, but their time has been stretched to the limits. Outdated facilities hinder education and research.
What the College is able to accomplish in the years ahead will depend largely on the success of the Spirit of Notre Dame campaign, which seeks $130 million in engineering support. The College's goals are audacious—to provide preeminent undergraduate education, to gain a national reputation as a first–tier engineering college, to conduct world–class research that addresses the critical needs of society—but well within reach, given proper funding.
