Institute for Latino Studies
By the middle of this century, Latinos are estimated to become the majority population in California and the largest ethnic and racial group in the entire United States. No surprise then that immigration and other Latino issues continue to be hot topics in the news media.
The overwhelming majority of this growing population is Catholic, and in 2005, the Vatican nearly elected a Latino pope. The University of Notre Dame is a natural home for a center of study on Latinos and the issues that are most relevant to them. Enter the Institute for Latino Studies, which was founded in 1999 to promote understanding and appreciation for the social, cultural, and religious life of U.S. Latinos through teaching, research, and outreach.
The Spirit of Notre Dame campaign seeks $15 million to expand these activities and strengthen the University's expertise and programming in a field of growing importance to the nation and the Catholic Church.
