Keough–Naughton Institute for Irish Studies
Ireland has an extraordinary tradition in literature, a unique position in relation to British and European historical development, and an influence—disproportionate to its size—on the history of the United States. Given its strong historical connection with Ireland and Irish–America, Notre Dame is an appropriate home for one of the world's top Irish studies programs.
In fact, Notre Dame launched the first Department of Irish Language and Literature in North America. The Keough–Naughton Institute for Irish Studies has garnered considerable attention in the scholarly world, as well as recognition from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the New York Times, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and more than 100 media outlets worldwide. In the few years since the institute was established, Notre Dame has ascended to a position of global leadership in the field.
The Spirit of Notre Dame campaign seeks $10 million to maintain and advance the notable achievements of the Keough–Naughton Institute for Irish Studies.
