Father John Jenkins, Notre Dame’s 17th President

jenkinsInaugurated as president on September 23, 2005, Father John Jenkins inherited a university that is unlike any other in the nation or even the world. He has made it his own personal mission to see that the distinctive character of Notre Dame—a character that holds faith and reason in equal esteem—is protected and enhanced.

Fr. Jenkins graduated from Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in 1976 and again, with a master’s, in 1978. He holds two philosophy degrees, including a doctorate, from Oxford University, and a master of divinity and licentiate in sacred theology from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. An expert on Thomas Aquinas, he continues to teach courses in ancient philosophy, medieval philosophy, and the philosophy of religion.

Fr. Jenkins was ordained a Holy Cross priest at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in 1983. Prior to assuming the role of president, he served for four years as a vice president and associate provost. From 1997 to 2000, he was the religious superior of the Holy Cross priests and brothers at Notre Dame.

“Let no one ever say that we dreamed too small…”

On Saturday, November 17, Fr. Jenkins hosted the members of the President’s Circle at an event featuring faculty and student speakers. The event provided an opportunity for members of the group to participate in a Q & A session with Fr. Jenkins before hearing presentations from Professor Brad Gregory (History) and his student Kyle Karches, followed by Rev. Thomas Streit, C.S.C. (Biological Sciences) and his student Brennan Bollman. Each faculty-student pair talked about how their scholarly efforts fit within the broader context of the University’s mission and how the relationship between teacher and student can shape a Notre Dame education.

The event also featured Mr. Richard Notebaert, chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees and President’s Circle member. Mr. Notebaert announced to those in attendance that Mr. J. Christopher Reyes, also a Trustee, is his successor as the Honorary Chairman of the President’s Circle. Following the morning program, the group enjoyed watching the Fighting Irish beat Duke in the last home game of the season.

“As an international student, the Notre Dame spirit allowed me to experience a sense of family while being away from home. Now that I work at Notre Dame, I continue to experience that through my students. It is a blessing to be touched by their intellectual and spiritual gifts. Notre Dame is a place where many students are driven to change the world. During their time here, they also manage to change the lives of those who work closely with them. They have changed mine.”
