His Eminence, John Cardinal O’Hara

Image of John Cardinal O'HaraJohn Cardinal O’Hara, C.S.C., founded Notre Dame’s College of Foreign and Domestic Commerce (now the Mendoza College of Business) in 1921. He served as the college’s first dean and later became president of the University, serving from 1934 to 1940. After his tenure as president, he was appointed the Cardinal Archbishop of Philadelphia.

Of the college he founded, Cardinal O’Hara once said: “The college should send [people] into business with a sound knowledge of business theory…with lofty ideals of citizenship, with sound conceptions of business morality…and with a character that will put those principles into practice under whatever temptations the world may offer.”

The profound influence of Cardinal O’Hara’s ethics, ideals, and innovation is still felt today in the Mendoza College of Business. The MBA recognition society that bears his name is a testament to his visionary spirit and principled leadership.

“For some the ‘spirit’ manifests itself in the roaring cheers that resonate throughout the campus on a fall Saturday afternoon. For others it’s the quiet whisper and spiritual calling that brings comfort and a sense of ‘home’ to those who kneel at the Grotto. Whatever the source, the spirit of Notre Dame is a sense of welcome and familiarity that bonds students, alumni, and friends throughout the world into one unified family.”
