St. Thomas More: A Model of Integrity

Image of a Statue of St. Thomas MoreThe patron saint of lawyers and students, Thomas More was also a devoted husband and father of four. He was renowned throughout England and beyond for his austere, almost priestly existence, and for his wit and intellect. Yet it is his profound devotion to and study of the Catholic faith for which he is most remembered: ultimately, such devotion cost him his life.

The Lord Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII, Thomas could not abide by the King’s wishes to divorce Catherine of Aragon in order to marry Anne Boleyn. He resigned his post over the matter. Later, after refusing to swear allegiance to the King as the supreme head of the Church of England, Thomas was convicted of high treason and beheaded.

In his unwavering faith and integrity, as well as his contributions to the legal and Catholic intellectual traditions, St. Thomas More embodies the core values of the Notre Dame Law School.

"I live a mile from campus, and Notre Dame has gone from being a place from where I have a lot of great memories, a place where I met my husband (we were both in the band), to a place where I spend time with my kids biking to campus for picnics, plays, and other fun activities. And now, in a full circle, it is the place my two oldest children call home: Daniel has just completed his freshman year and Kate will be a freshman in the fall. Notre Dame has been more of an influence on my life than I ever imagined, and I am grateful to the competent people who work there and who donate to make it all possible."
