The Man Who Shaped College Sports

Image of Father JoyceIn 2003, Notre Dame mourned the loss of Father Ned Joyce, the executive vice president emeritus who, with then-president Father Ted Hesburgh, guided the University in an era of unprecedented progress and made it a model of academic and athletic excellence.

Fr. Joyce’s passion for academics and athletics continues to bless the University—it is because of him that the compound noun “student-athlete” is taken so seriously at Notre Dame. His significant personal contributions to both the NCAA and the College Football Association changed college sports forever.

He was a national spokesman for academic integrity in intercollegiate sports long before the issue was in the national spotlight. He made sure that Notre Dame’s graduation rate for athletes was among the highest in the country.

For 35 years, Fr. Joyce built Notre Dame from a dream into the model it has become. Now Joyce Athletics Grants-in-Aid enable friends of the University to carry on his good work. This elite group of donors recognizes Fr. Joyce’s dedication to the student-athletes of Our Lady’s University, and by sustaining his legacy, continues to shape their lives.
