Virtual Run and Walk

How It Works

What is a Virtual Run & Walk?

The Proud to Be ND Virtual Run & Walk gives our Notre Dame family a chance to come together, wherever you may be, to share your love for our University and support ND students.

Simply make a gift on our registration page and pledge to run or walk a 5K, 10K, Half-Marathon, or Marathon on Tuesday, November 29.  In recognition of your commitment to Notre Dame, all Virtual Run & Walk donors will receive a Proud to Be ND finisher’s medal!

What’s new this year?

We’ll be debuting a new medal design for 2016 in the coming weeks! Also new to this year, Virtual Run & Walk donors have the option to sponsor a Notre Dame student in support of the Virtual Run & Walk Residence Hall Challenge.

Do I get a real medal for participating?

Yes! All Virtual Run & Walk donors will receive an actual finisher’s medal in the mail. The color of your ribbon will reflect your pledged distance:

5K - White Ribbon
10K - Green Ribbon
Half-Marathon - Blue Ribbon
Marathon - Gold Ribbon

Stay tuned to Proud to Be ND on social media for this year’s medal reveal!

When can I make a gift?

The Virtual Run & Walk registration page will be open soon (watch your email!) and will stay open until the end of the day on Race Day, November 29. You can register and make a gift at any time during that period.

Where can I run or walk?

Anywhere!  Treadmills to trails, get out and get active in your local community and encourage your family, friends, and fellow Fighting Irish fans to do the same.  Just be sure to stay safe!  Check out these general safety tips from the Road Runners Club of America.

Do you need proof that I actually finished my run or walk?

No, all Virtual Run & Walk donors will receive finisher medals, and there is no need to report any results on November 29.  We do encourage you, however, to talk about your experience online by sharing photos and videos on our Facebook event page, or anywhere on social media using #ProudtobeND.

How do I sponsor a ND student?

If you choose to run/walk or not, you can sponsor a student to participate in the Residence Hall Challenge. After you choose your distance and gift designation on the registration page, you have the option to Sponsor a Student. An additional donation of $15 will be added to your gift. We will ensure that a student experiences the 2016 Virtual Run & Walk due to your generosity. You don't have to sponsor a specific student. Feel free to select a Residence Hall from the dropdown and we will match your gift with a student from that hall.

If I sponsor a student and don’t run, will I still receive a medal?
Yes! All donors will receive a medal and race bib. Sponsored students will receive a race bib and "swag bag" on Race Day.

How can I let others know I’m participating?

Follow Proud to Be ND on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Then, share your training photos, medal pictures, and race day festivities using the hashtag #ProudtobeND.

Does my gift impact current students?

Yes! Your gift will help to make our one-of-a-kind undergraduate experience possible through support of financial aid and student life. Gifts made through the Virtual Run give University leaders the flexibility to quickly allocate funds to respond to emerging opportunities and urgent student needs.

I’m a Recognition Society member.  Does a Virtual Run & Walk gift count toward my membership?

Yes! As long as you select the gift designation that correponds to your Recognition Society, your gift will count toward your membership.

I belong to a Notre Dame alumni club. How do clubs compete in the Virtual Run/Walk?

For the second year, the Notre Dame Club with the largest number of registered participants will receive a championship banner in recognition of their pride and accomplishment. When recruiting race participants, please be sure to remind registrants to select their preferred club during online registration. The winner of the club competition in 2015 was the Club of Chicago. Good luck to all of our clubs this year!

Do Virtual Run & Walk donations count toward football lottery eligibility?

Yes! More information about football lottery eligibility can be found at

I want to run or walk in support of Notre Dame, but unfortunately can’t make a gift at this time.  Can I still participate?

Yes, we encourage everyone to show their pride and share photos of your experience using #ProudtobeND. Only Virtual Run & Walk donors will be recognized with a finisher's medal.

Why November 29?

November 29 is Giving Tuesday,  a widely recognized day of celebrating philanthrophy that follows Thanksgiving and the shopping events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Giving Tuesday encourages charitable giving and is fueled by social media and collaboration. Please consider supporting the University of Notre Dame on this day.

I’ve made a Virtual Run & Walk gift, but unfortunately can’t get out and run or walk on November 29. Can I still participate?

Yes! You can get out and run or walk whenever is most convenient for you.  Be sure to share your experience online using #ProudtobeND, and we might feature your submissions!
